If someone wants a reason not to think, they'll soon come up with one. Thus, the assessment that is set in philosophy courses is primarily an invitation to you to pursue what is already or, hopefully, soon to be your own interest in writing to explore ideas.

Whether you write your introduction before you write the rest of your essay or afterwards, it should conform to the following general pattern: it should state the problem to be addressed, and the line you are going to take, unless, for stylistic reasons, you want that to be a surprise but be careful deploying this tactic: remember that the overriding consideration is that your essay should be maximally comprehensible to your reader. Also, try to shorten and simplify sentences where you can do so without sacrificing the subtlety and inherent complexity of the discussion. In expounding a text or problem that ultimately just is vague, muddled, or obscure, try to convey such vagueness, muddle or obscurity clearly, rather than simply reproducing it in your own writing. Given these works, a timeline of viewpoints can be developed and can give a decent view of the shape of philosophy over time, as well as offering insight to how the time period and location may have shaped the views of philosophers. In doing so, we try to clarify the meanings of those beliefs and concepts and to evaluate critically their rational grounds or justification. Is it written or revised relatively recently? When you are writing an essay, for instance, you should certainly try to read more widely in relevant primary sources than just the extracts which Cottingham or similar provides.
